The Hazards and Joys of Thrifting

Yesterday I did a little thrifting at Goodwill.  Pink tags were 99 cents.  Yay!  Two of the other colored tags were 40% off.  So I threw several things I liked into my little pull along wheeled basket.  Most of the items that I randomly tossed in there ended up making quite nice little outfits when paired together.  I used to always try everything on, but I've recently gotten lazy and will sometimes forego trying on every single shirt.  Pants are a must for trying on before purchasing though.  However, yesterday was a holiday and there were loads of people waiting to use the dressing rooms.  I didn't have a ton of items, so I thought I'd just take a chance that they'd fit.  My total purchase came to $29.01 and I got 2 pair of capri pants, 1 pair ankle length pants, 4 tops, a cardigan, and 2 scarves.  Pretty good!  That's the joy part. :)
The hazard part comes from not trying on.  I soooooo loved these salmon colored capri's.
I loved the color and they went with the tops I'd purchased, plus lots of stuff I already have, plus I'd planned to wear my new bubble necklaces with them, and they were only $3.59 and Nine West brand.  Well...when I got home and tried them on I could get them on, but they fit my legs and butt like a sausage casing. haha  I need to lose 5-7 pounds before I can wear them in public without causing mass hysteria. lol  So that's a real bummer.  I may wear them for outfit photos (just at home) anyway, because who know when and if I'll ever lose that 5-7.
Next item that goes on the hazard list for not trying on before purchasing is this pair of brown ankle pants
I really needed some brown slacks for work and these polyester beauties were only 99 cents.  The bad part here is once I got them home I noticed they were a "petite" size.  I have other petite pants that do work for me because I guess I have shortish legs.  I really like the ankle length pants and thought that's what these were.  Well, they're not really.  They just fit me that way.  People may think they're just oddly short, but I'm going to wear them anyway and pretend they are chic, in style, and purposely intended to be that length.  If I knew how to sew properly I could taper the leg a little more at the ankle to make them look better...but I'm afaid if I tried I'd just end up totally ruining them.  So I'll have to think about that.
When you see these photographed for my outfits and laugh at how strange they look...just remember I only paid 99 cents for them and I'm determined to rock them out. haha

Okay, so here are the other things I bought that I'm totally happy with.  I have colored tank tops to wear underneath the floral tops.  I thought the red and white polka dot scarf was fun.

Do you ever buy things because they're inexpensive or just because you love them, but they don't really fit properly?  Or do I have a serious problem?  Don't answer that last question.  I already know the answer.  Because.... if I had tried on the above 2 pair of problem pants and realized their issues in the dressing room...would I have gone ahead and purchased them anyway?  Probably so.  I would have rationalized all of the above to myself and walked right out of the store with them.  Like 2 little rescue dogs...only pants.

*Note:  This is my longest post evah! haha

  1. Ha, ha, I loved your comments about the pants being rescue dogs! Whether I try something on or not depends on the store. If it's a VERY clean store I might; if not, no way - I take my chances on fit. Usually I don't walk away with a dog(!), but sometimes my rescues end up right back where I got them. Howl!! Fantastic post. You got some wonderful items in the end.

    1. You're so pristine, Melanie. :)
I just make sure to have undewear on and take my chances. I'm going to think of you now every time I'm in one of those dressing rooms and that little voice is going to whisper "Melanie would not approve of your unsanitary actions here, Lisa." hahaha

  2. It happens! There is one thrift store that I don't use the dressing room at because it's not a good one, so I take chances there, mostly to success, but not always.

    1. I guess at thrift store prices "mostly successes" are still pretty darn good. Just disappointing when there are items I really like or need. But there's always another day...

  3. Very productive shopping experience! Too bad about the pants though. Have you tried Spanx? I don't buy that brand because it's too expensive but there are cheaper versions out there. I like them under thinner pants that don't have pockets on the butt to hide the bumps. ;)

    1. Good idea, but I don't know if I could stand being further constricted. Maybe I could give it a try though. Bumpless would be a good thing. haha

  4. The shorter pant lengths are really on-trend right now, so yay for the brown pants!

    1. Yeah, I may very lightly hand sew them to taper a bit and see what it looks like. If I mess them up I could easily undo it I think. And I I'm successful I'll reinforce it.

  5. I never try on things in the thrifts. Some of the stores I shop don't even offer a dressing room...and yes, I've had things that didn't fit properly when I got home. I'm able to wear petite sizes on top, but my legs are too long for petite pants.

    1. I feel like my body is too hard to fit, especially on bottom. I could possibly take 50 pair of pants into a dressing room and sometimes be lucky if one fits and looks right. One store I go to does have a 7 day exchange only policy, but it's not really worth the trip back over to exchange one item when I can donate it with a couple other things and get a 30% off next purchase coupon.
It's interesting to see so many people don't try on. I sometimes head to the dressing room with 60 items or so. No joke. It's sad. ha
